Remote Learning Resources

Below are some added, optional, resources that we sent to parents IF they wanted to use them to extend their student's learning beyond what is being assigned during remote learning during last school year. We will continue to update this page as this year goes on, in the event that remote learning becomes reality again. This way families can preview the resource and decide if they would like their student to use it. The resources are housed here for you student to access as needed.

Resource 1: Scholastic Learn at Home

- Scholastic is compiling articles and activities from across their libraries to create 20 days worth of readings and activities from all subject areas. Grade level bands are available for readers of all ages.

Resource 2: Pop Culture Classroom's Storytelling Through Comics Unit

- Pop Culture Classroom uses pop culture ideas (primarily comics, graphic novels, and tabletop games) to teach academic standards. Storytelling through comics is a complete daily walkthrough guide on creating comics and graphic novels. The unit comes with complete daily lesson plans, a digital copy of Princeless, Vol. 1, a read-aloud MP3 file for Princeless, and video resources for learning some of the drawing skills involved. This unit is taught over 10-15 days.

Resource 3: Story Starters

- Story starters is a type of slot machine of writing options. Students start by choosing what type of story they would like to write and then spin the wheels to get their topic. If you are looking for a creative writing outlet and have a student that says "I don't know what to write about," here is one possible solution.

Resource 4: Museum Tours

- The link above tours the collections 12 of the great museums in the world through various methods. There are loads of educational tie ins. Here are a few ideas:

    • Art - discuss paintings and sculptures they like/don't like and why? Emulate some of the art seen on their own. My favorite is something called SCAMPER: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse. Doing this with art is always fun - Modify the Mona Lisa? Eliminate parts of the Art and discuss what is left...
    • History - find a piece of art your student likes, then research the artist, the time period, etc. Find movies about them or the art style.
    • Geography - where are these places in real life? Find them on a map. Not just the museums, but the art itself - where did it come from? Do some research, and plot latitude/longitude on a map. How far did it travel to get from where it was to where it is? (MATH!)

Resource 5: Learning is everywhere.

- This doc has a copy of the email that was sent that has ideas on how to find learning opportunities in everyday life.

Resource 6: EPIC! books

- EPIC! books is a collection of e-books and audio books at various reading levels and interest areas. There is a wealth of informational text written with highly engaging language and illustrations, as well as active narration (no robot voice).
