Feed the Hungry!

November 7-11, 2022

The focus for our next school-wide learning and service is for all students to collaboratively take part in "feeding the hungry" by collecting food for humans and preparing food treats for the birds around LTE as winter approaches.

  • Humans Needing Food - During the week of November 7th, we are collaborating with We Don't Waste to collect instantly consumable and healthy snacks that do not require cooking. These will be immediately distributed to shelters for any children and/or adults in need of food. We will set a school-wide goal of 15 individual items per student and if we meet our goal we will collect around 5,700 food items! Every class reaching the goal will be able to participate in a week of themed dress days in December. We will collect food Monday-Thursday, and on Friday, November 11, We Don't Waste will come with their truck to pick up the food. Students will be involved in helping deliver the food they collected to the truck.

*Here is a list of ideas that are individually packaged and wrapped grab-and-go type snacks: Cracker packs, granola bars, cookie packs, gogurt/yogurt, string cheese, individual chip/pretzel/popcorn bags, protein bars, etc.

  • Birds Needing Food - On this day, students will learn why it is good to feed the birds in the winter and use a design-thinking process to come up with ideas for their class to create ways to feed the birds. They will prototype and create lists of what they need for production and set schedules so that the items are created before December 9. On December 9 the feeding will take place around LTE.

This is also "One Book, One District" Week for Douglas County School District. The book being enjoyed by all students is If You Come to Earth by Sophie Blackall. It is a guide to our home planet and a call for us to take care of both Earth and each other. Watch the video below!
