Meet Ms. Winkelmann

Hey, Heritage Community! I am happy to be back this year!

My undergraduate degree is in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder. While working in a residential treatment center as the remedial reading and math teacher, I attended graduate school at the University of Colorado at Denver for my master's degree in Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education with an emphasis in Couple and Family Therapy. I have been working as a family therapist since 2004, specializing in adoption issues, attachment difficulties, and the impact of early childhood trauma on child development. Ready for an additional challenge, I recently decided to join the ranks of educators as a School Counselor.

While I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado, it is important for parents and members of the community to understand that School Counseling does not allow for the provision of clinical or psychotherapy services in a school setting. However, together with parents, caregivers, and the team at Heritage, I am looking forward to shaping our Counseling program to support our students' social and emotional development. Please reach out to me directly if you have questions about this; the distinction can be a little tricky!

When I'm not at school or doing community-based mental health work, I spend my time with two kittens who joined my household at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, writing, practicing yoga, developing my skills in photography, and my favorite - exploring the art of ballroom dancing!

Looking forward to the 21-22 school year! Please feel free to reach out with any of your thoughts and ideas around how the Heritage Community can be better supported.
