World War II raged from 1939 through 1945. America entered the war in 1941, following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.  At the end of the war, many were shocked to learn of the 6 million Jews and 5 million others who were systematically persecuted and killed.  News of the horrific deaths rarely reached the front pages of American newspapers.
