ESL Resource

To track your progress throughout the year, we will be using the following grading system. Most of the assignment/activities explain themselves, but, in case you have forgotten, please see the definitions below for a detailed description of each criteria.

Please keep all of your work in your ESL folder.

Participation/Classwork:

This section requires students to ask and answer questions, contribute to classroom discussions and activities, take notes, follow directions, work alone or with others, and complete and turn in daily assignments. Copies of assignments will be provided each day. If you are absent, it will be your responsibility to get and make up whatever you missed.

Writing Assignments:

This section requires students to write formal essays and short responses. These assignments are designed to assess (test) English writing skills, including, grammar, organization, and structure. All of these assignments will practice the writing cycle, where work will be peer edited and revised before it is turned in. Students are expected to write in complete sentences and will be graded on this skill. This work will apply towards redesignation-- exiting out of ESL.

Reading Assignments:

This section requires students to read a variety of texts, including those from their content classes or those meant to mirror specific reading skills. These assignments are meant to introduce text structure, reading strategies, comprehension, and analysis. Like writing, this work help students eventually exit out of ESL.

Presentations/Other Projects-- Part of Presentation

Throughout the year, students will present a variety of projects to their peers and will need to speak loudly, track their audiences, state their words/ideas clearly, and provide feedback to other presenters. Before each presentation, students will have lots of time to practice what they want to say AND create any visual aids they need for their project.

Final Exams/Projects (Teacher Assessed)

At the end of every 9-week session, students will be required to take a timed, writing exam. During this time, students will be expected to present their best writing and use MLA where necessary. All exam rules and expectations will be practiced and assessed with rubrics BEFORE the actual test date. These grades are final.
