In first grade, your child will have nightly reading.
We encourage your child to read aloud for at least 20-30 minutes each night. Research indicates that children who read for at least 30 minutes a day tend to improve their reading skills.
If your child can read quietly and independently, please have them summarize what they've read after 20 minutes. If they are not yet able to read independently for that long, you can alternate reading together—let them read a bit to you, and then read to them. Listening to audiobooks at home is also a great option, as we simply want your child to engage with reading in any way possible!
Additionally, please practice the sight words included in your child's book bag. We include a signature sheet in their book bag for you to sign, allowing us to track their homework progress each day. Thank you for your support in fostering a love for reading!
Occasionally, we may have writing or math homework to send home.
PLEASE ALSO ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO COUNT MONEY AT HOME! WE ARE WORKING ON LIFE-LONG SKILLS IN MATH.
