Here at Eldorado Elementary, we have a Kindergarten program that encompasses a literacy-rich environment that supports Kindergarten Colorado Academic Standards in Math, Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies and Health.
Partner Reading
Reading:
During the day we have opportunities to listen to stories, ask questions, build or activate background knowledge, make connections, discuss story elements such as; characters, setting, problem, solution, main idea, beginning, middle, and end. These components are taught during reading lessons. The end result is to reinforce and build comprehension skills and create lifelong readers.
In addition, we have quiet independent reading, shared reading, and guided reading groups. We explore fiction and non-fiction stories while learning reading strategies and comprehension skills, so that they may feel more confident as readers themselves.

Writing:
Writing begins with modeled writing and a focus lesson to become “Good Writer’s”. Good writer’s: Think, Draw, Write and draw detailed pictures and listen to beginning sounds to create words to match our story. Children will use journals to develop writing and expression. We learn strategies for spelling unknown words and build our confidence to spell words the best we can.
As students progress, we begin by responding to a given topic by thinking, brainstorming, narrowing down our big ideas, planning, and finally writing. In Kindergarten, this process is mostly verbal as we learn the structure of a sentence and paragraph. We provide the students a topic sentence and conclusion. Then, the students practice writing one to three big ideas using complete thoughts. We continue to ensure our picture matches our topic, add details and color, and ask questions about our writing: Can I read my writing? Does it make sense (complete thought)? Is there anything else I need?
