First Grade at Eldorado

Please refer to the "I Can" statements for First Grade Level Expectations.

Reading:

Throughout the day, first grade students will build knowledge while exploring our world through literacy.  At Eldorado, we guide our instruction through the research- based curriculum: Wonders.  We will build foundational skills such as phonics, phonemic awareness, word study, and fluency. Furthermore, throughout the school year students will have several opportunities to enrich their literary skills with read alouds, independent reading, shared reading, and small group and whole group instruction.

Additionally, students will explore different genres of text while continuing to work on their reading strategies and comprehension skills in order to gain confidence as young readers.

Writing:

First grade writing instruction is embedded in the literary Wonders curriculum.  Students will be building their skills with mini lessons, genre specific prompts, and vocabulary. Students will be given ample opportunities to practice with journal writing, text responses, and independent rotations. First graders will focus on building up to complete informative and opinion paragraphs and personal and informative narratives throughout the year.

Math:

At Eldorado, we guide our instruction through the curriculum, enVision's Mathematics. The instructional model has a two-step design: Problem-Based learning. Dailey lessons include an introduction of concepts and procedures with a problem-solving experience and Visual Learning, making the important mathematics explicit with enhanced direct instruction connected to the problem-based learning. Each lesson is followed by guided and independent practice.
