If you like asking questions, designing and experiment, testing, and collecting data, start with an experimental design project.
The key to a good and manageable investigation is to choose a topic of interest, then ask what is called a “testable question.”
1) Testable questions are those that can be answered through hands-on investigation.
2) The key difference between a general interest science question and a testable question is that testable questions are always about changing one thing to see what the effect is on another thing.
Use this checklist as you plan and conduct your experiment. All steps on this checklist should be included on your project board. It is also VERY important that you take a close look at the experimental design rubric (see below) for 3rd-6th grade level. Encuentre la versión en español de este documento aquí.
This is the rubric that will be used for the Experimental Design projects. It is VERY important that you take a look at it BEFORE you begin working, WHILE you are working, and AFTER you are done working and preparing to share your work. Encuentre la versión en español de este documento aquí.
Use this checklist as you plan and conduct your experiment. The students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will not be judged on a rubric the day of the fair. They will have the opportunity to share their work and learning with a judge. All students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will receive a participation ribbon.
