In Class Expectations
Students are expected to conduct themselves in ways that are respectful and safe. No making fun of other students, off color remarks, negative body language, or poor attitude in this class! When other students are giving performances or presentations, they need your support as you will need their support when it is your turn.
Do not enter or leave the class during a performance, talk or get distracted, or do other work. Students with improper audience etiquette will lose several participation points.
Students are expected to follow all district and school policies and rules regarding electronics, dress code, etc. Refer to planner for those rules and policies
Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared for class with all materials and assignments.
Students are expected to participate in class activities. Lack of participation in these activities or a negative or uncooperative attitude while doing so will adversely affect participation points.
Students are expected to memorize lines and perform in front of the class.
Students are expected to be part of a tech or production crew.
Students are expected to submit written work and assignments to Google Classroom.
Out of Class Expectations
Please note: There are requirements outside of class. First, each semester, you are expected to see a live theatrical production at DHS or another school or professional venue and submit a play critique. Additionally, you may be working as part of the cast or crew, on a short play, sketch, or scene to be performed to the public second semester. This is part of your final performance grade. You may help work on other DHS productions also; some weekend or after school time may be needed, for which you could receive extra credit.
You are expected to attend each DHS Play Production. Those tentative dates are in Oct. and March. Attending and critiquing live theatrical productions is an important part of learning about theater. You are expected to provide a written critique of each play. If these dates don’t work, you can attend a different production.
You will have the opportunity to participate in Drama Club and join Douglas High School's International Thespian Society Troupe #990. ITS sponsors a regional, state and international theater festival where students perform and are judged in various acting and technical theater events as well as short film. You can also write and submit plays to Play Works.
For extra credit students can attend additional theater productions or read plays and write a review for extra credit.
DUE DATES and Late Work Policy
Deadlines are important. Due dates established in advance for any assignment, performance, or project are held firm; if the student is absent on the due date, the work is due on the day the student returns to school. Duo and ensemble projects and performances cannot ALWAYS be made up. Missing a performance has an extremely negative effect on the overall course grade.
- WORK IS DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS!!
- Each semester, you receive 1 free homework pass worth 20 points to be used for any assignments other than a group project.
- One late homework pass per 6-week grading period can be applied to an assignment for full credit. The assignment must be turned in by the end of the grading period. Use these wisely!! These are not replaced if lost or stolen.
- Assignments will be will be penalized 50% until the end of that unit or up to the 6 week grading period, whichever comes first. After the passing of the 6 week grading period, any work not turned in from the previous 6 weeks will NOT BE ACCEPTED.
- Major projects: Only partial credit will be given for projects, and late credit is always better than no credit. No credit will be given after the unit ends or the 6-week grading period, whichever comes first.
- Late work on group projects or essays will never be awarded full credit.
- Reflection Papers: All reflection papers following performances must be turned in within 2 class periods after presenting. See handout for guidelines.
- Makeup is your responsibility. The school policy for make-up work applies. When you are absent ask your classmates, "What did we do when I was gone?" Do not interrupt me during class or just before class. Each student must assume full responsibility for all notes, assignments or announcements made during class. I cannot re-teach a lesson. Check Google Classroom and Infinite Campus for assignments. Students who are not in class will have to rely on notes from a friend. Copies of handouts are available. Make up days are for unforeseen absences. If you know you will be absent, you are responsible for asking for work ahead of time and turning in all work on time. Group Performance cannot be made up.
**Most assignments can be found in Google Classroom**
Grading
Expect grades in the following areas: participation and in-class work, performances, notebooks and/or journals, homework, quizzes and tests, projects, production crew tasks, and overall positive, respectful, and helpful attitude in the classroom.
All students can earn up to 100 participation points per 6-week grading period. Everybody starts off at 75 points and that grade will increase and decrease throughout that time. Participation points are based on punctuality, involvement, use of time, appropriate content, audience etiquette, attitude, contribution as a team member toward a sense of ensemble and positive class culture, and growth. Some points are for time used in class to rehearse for performances and/or work on a production crew. Refer to Drama Class Behavior matrix.
You will not be graded on talent but your individual growth and how well you prepare and apply what you learn. Ability to take criticism in order to improve is a necessary trait. You will lose points if you cannot receive feedback gracefully.
Please keep all paper work in your binder to verify a grade if an issue arises.
Google Classroom will be used to submit the majority of assignments. The code to join is _____________
