Cesar A. Buenaventura UP Centennial Professorial Chair
A new school year just started ...
Our involvement with AI4PEP continues! We are priviledged to take part in this international research program (16 countries in the global south), and we are one of only four in Asia! The theme of this Canadian-funded (IDRC) research project is using AI/ML and other new technologies for pandemic and epidemic preparedness. In support of this goal, graduate and undergrad students in the lab will be:
1) Starting a new heading, "Environmental Surveillance for Health"! This could stand on its own, or might be a continuation of the earlier efforts on early warning, now concentrating on the "watch" part of: watch, warning and emergency. We continue to lay-out research with under-served, remote, isolated communities in the Western Visayas, which present the challenge of being data-poor, have spotty communications links, and inaccessible!
Ultimately, we want to make real-time warnings and projections for health concerns, particularly with infectious diseases.
2) We have made headway with using inference diagrams and Bayesian networks in a mental health application. Using methods from Gab Santos' MS thesis. The cascade is: Epidemic -> may or may not have physical symptoms -> mental health and well-being issues for individuals. This will now be extended to explore other nodes/events, like: financial and economic state of the community, security and other community concerns as a result of the pandemic, aside from mental health issues. The final node might be: "state of the community after the pandemic".
