The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Austin Junior High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students are selected for membership by a majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year.
Students in grades eight and nine are eligible for membership. Those students who were inducted into the Austin Middle School chapter in 7th grade will be members of the AJHS chapter in 8th grade. For the scholarship criterion, a student must maintain an overall average of 93. Students who meet this criterion at the end of fall semester are invited to complete a Candidate Form that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. Active participation in school activities and community service are highly encouraged.
Members in good standing are required to attend chapter meetings and participate each year in one chapter community service project and at least one service project as an individual or in a small group.
An induction ceremony is held every spring for eligible students to accept membership and be recognized for their achievements.
