7.4 quake halts classes; school ensures students' safety

Classes were suspended at DCHS V. Mapa after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Davao Oriental was felt in Davao City on Friday, October 10, 2025.
The school implemented its emergency procedures to ensure the safety of everyone on the campus, with all students being evacuated first along V. Mapa Street as part of the initial safety procedures.
Once the situation was deemed stable, the students were escorted back onto the campus, as they waited for their parents to fetch them.
High school students stayed at the open court, and elementary and preschool pupils stayed at the quadrangle.
A few students who experienced fainting, nosebleeds, and breathing difficulties received immediate medical attention from school personnel.
After inspection by engineers, the school announced that the campus is structurally sound; however, the Preschool Familympics and Sportsfest/Varsity practices were postponed, and students were advised to await updates on possible changes in learning modality in the following week.

Meanwhile, nine Hillstar staffers who were attending the Campus Journalism Academy at Magallanes Elementary School were safely evacuated and later returned to V. Mapa to be fetched by their parents.
The training, which aimed to prepare student journalists across Davao City for the upcoming schools press conferences, was postponed indefinitely by the event organizers after the earthquake.
