Junior Next Guide
Designed for juniors across the state of Tennessee, the Next Guide is a resource to help students prepare for what’s “next” after high school graduation. Whether a student plans to enroll in a technical school, community college or university, join the military, or enter the workforce, the Next Guide contains resources that can help make those postsecondary goals a reality.
Junior Next Guide is divided into 6 sections:
Staying on Track
This section contains checklists that provide an overview of the steps students will need to take during their junior year to enroll in a technical school, community college or university, join the military, or enter the workforce.College Knowledge
For students who plan to continue their education after high school, this section contains key information about college lingo, types of colleges and degrees, applying to colleges, taking the ACT and/or SAT, applying for the TN Promise, campus visits and college fairs.Paying for College
In this section, students will find information about the financial aid application process, the financial aid and scholarships available in Tennessee, and federal financial aid.Enlisting in the Military
This section gives students general information about enlisting and ROTC programs and provides students with links to helpful websites.Joining the Workforce
In this section, students will find information about searching for jobs, creating a resume, and writing a cover letter. What's Next?
This section contains a checklist of key items that students will need to complete during their senior year to enroll in a technical school, community college or university.
If you have not taken the ACT yet, you will be taking it this year!
The state provides a free ACT to all Juniors in the Spring of your Junior year. This state-provided ACT is taken during the school day and more information will be provided to you closer to time.
You don't have to wait for your free state provided ACT, though. You can go ahead and take the National ACT, if you haven't already. Click the ACT logo to the left to be taken to the ACT site.

The Tennessee Governor's Schools provide eleven challenging and high-intensity programs for rising 11th and 12th grade students nominated by high school faculty. Each school offers a unique learning environment for students interested in the arts, humanities, agriculture science, STEM programs, advanced mathematics, physics, leadership, international studies, Tennessee history, or potential teaching careers. Students interested in participating in a Governor's School should obtain the application from a high school administrator, school counselor, or other faculty member. Applications, submission information, and critical deadlines will be posted on the webpages of each individual Governor’s Schools site.
