Dear NJHS Parents and Guardians,

My name is Seth Spykstra, and I am honored to serve as the advisor for our chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) this year. At Ascent, I currently serve as the Head of the Science Department and Assistant Dean of Students. I am excited to continue in this role and work alongside our students as they develop leadership skills, pursue meaningful service opportunities, and uphold the core values of scholarship, character, leadership, and service.

My goal is to guide and support our NJHS members as they grow as leaders and make a meaningful impact on both our school and the broader community. I hope to build upon the strong foundation already established while continuing to elevate the rigor and experience of NJHS at Ascent Classical Academy.

Throughout the year, we will participate in a variety of service projects both on and off campus, leadership opportunities, and school events that allow students to put the mission of NHS into practice. We will also frequently partner with the Booster Club to provide students with additional service opportunities throughout the school year.

I will communicate regularly with students and families regarding upcoming events, service opportunities, and important deadlines. Email will be our primary method of communication, and I will also keep updated NHS information available on my teacher website.

Please know that I value open communication. If you ever have questions or would like to connect, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly by email.

There are two important updates for students and families as we begin the school year:

1. First NJHS Meeting: Our first meeting with all NHS members will take place on Wednesday, September 2nd, during lunch in Room 300 from 1:00–1:40 PM. During this meeting, we will review the NJHS bylaws, discuss officer elections, and go over our service-hour tracking process.

2. Lunchroom Cleanup: We will begin lunchroom cleanup on Tuesday, August 25. An attached schedule indicates which day each student is assigned to help with cleanup. Students are expected to report 15 minutes before the end of lunch on their assigned day. Please review the schedule carefully so that you know when you are expected to serve.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and the NHS program. I am looking forward to a fantastic year and to working together to make NHS a meaningful and impactful experience for our students.
