Class Structure

Class Structure

Junior Secondary (Grades 7–9) students are streamed into 9 classes in each grade.

For Senior Secondary (Grades 10–12), HKDSE students are streamed into 6 classes and IBDP students into 2 classes in each grade.

Junior Secondary Streaming

Streaming of Junior Secondary students admitted from 2021-2022 will be carried out as below:

1. Ranking students based on Overall Form Positions

For G7 streaming, a student’s Overall Form Position is based on the Total Score (out of 300 marks) in the Streaming Tests (English, Chinese/French and Mathematics).

For G8 and G9 streaming, the Overall Form Positions of G7 and G8 students at the end of the school year are used respectively. A student’s Overall Form Position is based on the Annual Total Score aggregated from the Mid-year Examinations and Final Examinations scores.

Calculation of Annual Total Scores for Overall Form Positions in G7 and G8

1Results in examinations and continuous assessments (CA) (e.g. tests, assignments, projects) contribute to the full score.

2. Allocating students to 2 groups in each grade

About one-third of the students with the highest Overall Form Positions in each grade are streamed into Group 1; the remaining students are allocated to Group 2.

3. Allocating students in Group 1 to 3 classes

Students in Group 1 are streamed into class D, S and G according to their English and Chinese abilities. The number of students in each class is approximately the same. Students with the highest positions in English are streamed into class D; the remaining students with the highest positions in Chinese are streamed into class S; the rest are allocated to class G.

4. Allocating students in Group 2 to 6 classes

Students in Group 2 are streamed into 6 classes: class P, M, L, A, J and T. Each class consists of a similar number of students of mixed academic abilities.

To cater for learner diversity and provide better academic support, around 30 students with the lowest positions in Chinese are allocated to 2 Chinese remedial groups; around 15 students with the lowest positions in English and around 15 students with the lowest positions in Mathematics are allocated to the English remedial group and the Mathematics remedial group respectively.

Students studying French are allocated to Group 1 and Group 2 based on their Overall Form Positions. All French boys in each group are allocated to the same class to optimize learning and teaching effectiveness.

The school reserves the right to make any necessary adjustment to optimize learning and teaching effectiveness.

Grade 10 Streaming

Streaming of G10 HKDSE students is carried out as below:

1. Ranking students based on Overall Form Positions

For G10 HKDSE streaming, the Overall Form Positions of G9 students at the end of the school year are used. A student’s Overall Form Position is based on the Annual Total Score aggregated from the Mid-year Examinations and Final Examinations scores.

Calculation of Annual Total Scores for Overall Form Positions in G9

1Results in examinations and continuous assessments (CA) (e.g. tests, assignments, projects) contribute to the full score.

2. Allocating HKDSE students to 6 classes

Students are allocated to 6 classes according to their elective subjects. For further details, please refer to "HKDSE Curriculum" under "Academics" on the school’s website.
