Improving the employment prospects of young people in these difficult times, a resource for Career Practitioners. COVID-19 has radically affected Australia’s labour market. We have seen an unprecedented fall in employment, a dramatic drop in hours worked, a significant increase in underemployment, a record number of people leaving the labour force, and job vacancies falling to the lowest level in over a decade. Young people have been disproportionately affected. Despite this, Australia is still doing better than most other nations in terms of economic resilience. While there will be some significant changes in the jobs market as a result of these disruptions, Health care and social assistance will continue to be the largest employing industry across the country. Retail, accommodation and food services, Education and training, and the Manufacturing industries will continue to provide many jobs. The Professional and technology sector has shown resilience through the impacts of COVID-19 and there is evidence it could grow in importance and provide greater employment opportunities in the future. The work of the National Skills Commission, regularly discusses recruitment issues with employers. And in these times of greater competition for jobs, knowing what employers are looking for when hiring new staff has taken on even greater importance. These issues and more will be discussed in the webinar by Ivan Neville, Improving their employment prospects of young people in these difficult times, a resource for Career Practitioners. Presenter - Ivan Neville, Manager Labour Market Research and Analysis Branch, National Skills Commission. To register, please visit:
