आज के समय में विश्व की तेज़ी से बढ़ती आबादी की मांगों के कारण पृथ्वी के तीनों मंडलों (वायुमंडल, जलमंडल और स्थलमंडल) में असंतुलन हो गया है। इस असंतुलन के कारण हमें पर्यावरण और पृथ्वी के रक्षण, संरक्षण और प्रबंधन से संबंधित रणनीतियों, नीतियों और कानूनों को फिर से सोचने, आंकलन और मूल्यांकन करने के लिए हमें मजबूर कर दिया है। हम सभी जानते हैं कि मनुष्यों की जरूरतों को पूरा करने पृथ्वी की क्षमता सीमित है और दिन-प्रतिदिन थकाऊ है। हाल ही में संयुक्त राष्ट्र "आईपीसीसी रिपोर्ट" में कहा गया है कि यह "स्पष्ट" है कि जलवायु परिवर्तन मानव गतिविधियों के कारण हो रहा है हम सभी जानते हैं कि मनुष्यों की जरूरतों को पूरा करने में पृथ्वी की क्षमता सीमित है और दिन-प्रतिदिन घटती जा रही है। हाल ही में संयुक्त राष्ट्र की "आईपीसीसी रिपोर्ट" में कहा गया है कि यह "स्पष्ट" है कि जलवायु परिवर्तन मानव गतिविधियों के कारण हो रहा है ।

अल्प और दीर्घावधि में गंभीर परिणामों को समझते हुए भारत के माननीय उच्चतम न्यायालय ने समय-समय पर उपलब्ध पर्यावरणीय संसाधनों और विकास के बीच संतुलन बनाए रखने के लिए तथा मानव जीवन और पर्यावरण को बचाने के लिए भारत के संविधान के अनुच्छेद-21 (जीवन का अधिकार) की व्याख्या की है। मा० सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने स्कूल और स्नातक स्तरों पर छात्रों को पढ़ाने और पर्यावरण के प्रति जागरूक करने का आदेश पारित किया। भारत सरकार ने उच्चतम न्यायालय के आदेशों का पालन करते हुए साथ ही साथ इस दर्शन में विश्वास करते हुए कि "रोकथाम इलाज से बेहतर है" तथा महात्मा गांधी जी का उद्धरण कि "पृथ्वी मनुष्यों की जरूरतों को पूरा करने के लिए पर्याप्त है, लेकिन हर किसी के लालच को नहीं", एक विशेष विषय "पर्यावरण विज्ञान" के शिक्षण को अनिवार्य बना दिया और तदनुसार, देशबंधु कॉलेज में एक अलग "पर्यावरण अध्ययन विभाग" की स्थापना की गई है। विभाग का उद्देश्य न केवल पर्यावरण शिक्षा प्रदान करना है बल्कि छात्रों को पर्यावरण के मूल्यों, दर्शन, सिद्धांतों, नैतिकता और पर्यावरण संरक्षण की आवश्यकता पर चिंतन करवाना भी है। देशबंधु कॉलेज में पर्यावरण शिक्षा प्रदान करने का उद्देश्य छात्रों को "प्रकृति और उसके जैविक और अजैविक घटकों" के प्रति जागरूक करने और उन्हें "पर्यावरण के राजदूत और संरक्षक" बनने के लिए प्रेरित करना भी है।

The recent imbalances in all three Spheres (Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and lithosphere) of the Earth due to the increasing demands of the rapidly growing population has led us to re-think, re-assess and re-evaluate the strategies, policies, and laws related to the preservation and conservation of the environment. The Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, from time to time has interpreted Article-21 (Right to Life) of the Constitution of India to save human life and the environment to maintain a balance between environment and development. In the timeline, the Supreme court passed an order to teach and make students aware of the environment at school and graduation level. Following the orders of the Supreme court, the teaching of the specialized subject "Environmental Science" has been made compulsory in the course.

We all know that the Earth’s capability to cater to the needs of human beings is limited and is day by day exhausting. The recent United Nations IPCC report states that it is “UNEQUIVOCAL” that CLIMATE CHANGE is occurring due to human activities. Realizing the grave consequences in the short and long term, following the philosophy that “Prevention is better than cure” and Mahatma Gandhiji’s quote that "Earth has enough to fulfill the needs of the human beings but not everyone’s greed”, the Government of India included the study of Environment and its protection, an integral subject at the graduation level. In accordance, a new and separate "Department of Environmental Studies" has been established at the Deshbandhu college to impart environmental education to the students of the college. The purpose of the Department is not only to impart Environmental education but also make students to inculcate and ponder over the Values, Philosophy, Principles, Ethics of the Environment, and the need for Environment protection. The purpose of imparting Environmental education at Deshbandhu College is to endeavor and sensitize the students toward “Nature and its Biotic and Abiotic components” and inspire them to become the “AMBASSADORS and PROTECTORS of the ENVIRONMENT”
