I think that the paint job went the best. I used to paint a lot in my free time in middle school so I have a bit of experience with painting. Additionally, I think the CNC cutting went well because it was simple and quick.
The OnShape component of this project was particularly difficult for me. There were lots of buttons and small steps that I bypassed by accident and spent most of class time figuring out OnShape. I had never used the program before, so I had a bit of a learning curve. In the future, I think I will be more proficient at OnShape because I have more experience now.
The first things I did was create the design for my sign on Illustrator. I wanted a ski-themed sign because have a house in Breckenridge, which is where I'll hang the sign. At first, I wanted to do skis for my sign, but it was difficult to get the shape right so I chose to do a ski-goggle sign that says "Breck" in the frames because they were easier to trace. I found a cartoon image online of ski goggles and traced it using the pen tool. Then, still using the pen tool, I made the letters in "Breck." I chose not to use the text tool because I didn't like any of the fonts, so I preferred my own letters. Then, I traced an image of a snowflake using the pen tool and used the shape as the holes in my R and B.
Then, I converted my Illustrator design to a .dxf file and brought it into OnShape. I extruded the sign to 1/4". Then I created a box that was 15x8 around my design to represent the wood I would be cutting on. Then I created a path for the toolbit to follow when cutting out the sign.
Now it was time to cut out my sign on the CNC machine. I started by taping a section of the machine where my sign would go. Then I taped the back of the piece of wood and glued it to the the tape on the machine. Then, I set the bit to the bottom left corner of the wood and got to cutting!
Next, I sanded my sign to make it as smooth as possible to paint. I used an electric sander for most of it but I used a sheet of sandpaper for the hard-to-get places.
Finally, I painted my sign. I chose to use blue and white to represent a snowy day on the mountain. i painted the top half blue and the bottom half white and blended them together in the middle. Then, I took a damp paintbrush and dipped it in white. I flicked the paintbrush over the sign to make little snowflakes. Finally I painted little snowflakes over the holes in the B and R.
