First I created the frame by measuring my stock and putting the measurements into fusion to realistically create my frame.
I then spray painted the stock so then the frame would have some color to it.
I then put masking tape on the wood so then we could glue the wood on to a platform without it moving while its being cut. The tape is there so then we don't damage the wood with the glue.
I now have to send the programing for cutting my stock into a frame to the computer the CNC is connected to.
On the computer i have to adjust the drilling bit to the corner of the stock (X axis and Y axis) and then the Z-axis. And then i can start the cutting.
The CNC machine will follow the path that you have designed, and sent to the computer.
I now have to take the design of my frame from Fusion and put it into illustrator. This is so then i can create a path that is slightly smaller than the opening for the photo so then the acrylic, and wood backing perfectly fit inside the frame. I do this buy first creating the path to how big i was the size of the acrylic and wood to be, then i sent it to the app that will be able to send how strong the laser is, and the size of my piece to the laser cutter.
I did this by designing the correct size for the acrylic in illustrator. I then sent it to another app to print it to the machine.
Cutting the backer for my frame.
Finishing product of the cut acrylic and wood next to my frame!
I now am going to put a gloss on the frame to give it a finishing look.
Now I can start creating what i want to put in the frame- In illustrator ill crop a photo to the size of the inside of my frame and the printer will print it and cut it.
On illustrator I save my work to a PDF then send it to makerspace gmail so i can easily send the photos from a different computer to the Roland. Once the Roland prints and cuts the photos, my project will be over, and i will have to framed photos of my friends!
1. In your own words describe the major steps to successfully go from a 3D Model to a CNC cut part.
To make sure that all the measurements are correct in every aspect.
2. What part of CAD/CAM did you find most complicated or confusing?
Making sure that everything was set before cutting, for example setting the axis for X,Y and Z , also double checking that the CNC will be making the correct cuts.
3. What lessons did you learn along the way?
To double check everything.
4. What tools/software did you learn to use in order to create the artwork for your frames?
The CNC machine , Illustrator, Fusion, the laser cutter, the Roland and the machine we used to put the gloss on our frames.
5. Why did you choose the artwork that you did?
I chose photos of me and my friends because I love my friends and i am yet to have photos of them framed.
