My first step was to figure out what i was going to do, and after having a lot struggle figuring it out i came up with this. I started with a heart that i found on the Internet then i took the letter V and merged them together in illustrator, finishing with adding the leaves on the sides.
Taking my piece to the next step by putting it onto fusion so then I can put it into the CNC machine. For this i had to take out the leaves because im going to laser cut them.
I have now moved on to the wood, and before i put it into the CNC machine i spray painted it because i want the edges to be a different color than the inside of the pocket.
This is a photo of the control system of the CNC, the green on the right id how you move it to get it set up for you stock. On the left is the path that the CNC will take.
Here i am watching my wood get cut because if something is wrong with my design and the CNC starts to do the wrong thing then i will be able to stop it. Im also vacuuming the the little pieces of wood that are getting cut up.
This i what it looked like right after the machine was finished. The blue wrap was originally put on so then i could cover the already colored part and spray paint the inside, but it came off when it was being cut.
I learned that the blue wrap came off because i didn't sand the wood before I painted it. Im now sanding the inside because I want the paint to look better.
Because the wrap came off and i want to paint the inside I had to cover it in masking tape, then i went in with an exactor knife to clean the edges of the tape.
Here is the other color that i ended up spray painting it. I did notice that the wood was a bit bumpy even after sanding it, and i also put a bit too much paint, but it still turned out looking good.
I now am going to put a clear coat on it to put and extra protective layer on it and make it shiny.
From illustrator i took the leaves and put them onto the app where i can control the epilogue laser. I used a white acrylic because that is the color that i want as my leaves and i also think that it will go better with the pink.
After they were cut out, there were some burn marks left on them. So I went in with acetone to clean it up and it worked very nicely. ( The one on the left is before, and the one on the right is after.)
I did end up running into trouble with the acrylic because the first time i tried to cut it, the laser wouldn't go all the way though and was just melting the acrylic. This happened twice till i realized that the acrylic was weird and made out of a more plasticky material. Third times the charm and it finally worked when I got the right acrylic.
My next step was to spray paint the back because, I want to super glue these pieces to my wood, and for the super glue not to show through painting it is essential.
Last minute i thought that my piece was missing something, so i decided to take this pink mirror like acrylic and laser cut stars to put in the pocket of the heart.
These stars I feel really pull the piece together, and i really like the way they fill in the empty space.
After super glueing the acrylics on my piece, was finished I am very happy with how it came out!
1. In your own words describe the major steps to successfully design something in illustrator, use it to model in fusion, and use laser cutter after cutting on the CNC.
Making sure that everything on the 3D model is correct because then everything else should work out the way you want it to.
2. What did you learn about the process of painting and masking?
That i should sand my wood before i put paint on it. And that will solve the problem that i had with the masking because it would have stuck better if i sanded down the wood first.
3. What part of CAD/CAM did you find most complicated or confusing?
After doing it before it was a lot easier this time but when it came to the blue masking that was covering the color that i had, it got tricky because the machine took it off.
4. What lessons did you learn along the way about working through a multi step project?
That i should sand my wood before i put paint on it.
5. What tools/software did you learn to use in order to create your piece?
The CNC machine , Illustrator, Fusion, the laser cutter, and spray paint
