How to Create the Piece
Adobe Illustrator
I started by tracing the shape I wanted in Adobe Illustrator.
Next I used the Adobe Illustrator shape builder to take all of my individual shapes and make it one big shape
After making the combined model I selected the lamborghini words alone and I cut it out of the document using Command + X and then I made a new file using file then new and then I pasted the words into the new doc using Command V
Next, I exported both Adobe Illustrator files as a DXF files. And Carefully named them so I can get back to it in the future (THE DXF PART IS KEY!)
Fusion 360
Design
I selected the create sketch button to start to process
The selected the plane I wanted it on. X, Y, Z plane selected (shown above)
Then I selected the Insert DXF file button to bring our Abobe Lamborghini body DXF file to Fusion 360
Finish sketch
Next, extrude your design to -.75 inches thickness.
First select your design with the profile select button, the go to distance and change the distance to -.75 in.
If you don't see your units as inches, go to the top right and click on your profile the click preferences
Then scroll down to default units and change your design and manufacture units to inches, then apply
Next, extrude the pannels down -.25 for the Acrylic and the size of the stand offs that you have inches so that it is a pocket
Manufacture
Go from design to manufacture
Create a new setup in the Manufacture
Next, Go to stock and change the mode to a fixed size box, then change your width and depth to whatever your dimentions are with a .5 margin of error (ex. if 8.75 make 9.25, etc.) then make sure your height is .5 in
Next, go to the setup page and make sure the orientation is model orientation and the origin is stock box point. Next, click the blue box next to the stock point setting and then select the front top left box point, or the bottom left point if 2D and the top point of the bottom left when 3D
First you want to select the pocket funtion and then go to the geometry tab which is the box with orange on top and select the bottom part of each pocket and that will
then go to the heights tab and make sure that multiple depths is selected .
Next you want to select the countour tool and select the bottom edge like so.
Then select the 1/4th in tool bit then go to heights and select multiple depths
NC Program
Select the NC program button
Make sure you post it as CENTROID/centroid and then name the file to something meaningful to you, then post it
CNC Machine
For the CNC machine you want to send your job over by opening the NC output folder and then sending it via email to the machine. Make sure that before you run the job you set you X,Y,Z values, you makes sure the job is loaded, make sure the air compressor is on, and make sure that you piece of wood is cut to size and glued to the spoil board
Post processing
After I pulled my design off of the CNC machine I started by going back to my original design in Adobe illustrator and I took each section individually and I offset each portion by -.065 so that it would be able to fit into the pockets with a small area around thats open. After that I sent the file to the Fusion pro and I started by cutting 1/4 inch plywood so that it could mimic acrylic without using the matieral. Once I made sure that it had cut out properly and I switched to the clear acrylic. After I made sure that I had each potion cut out properly I spray painted the BACK side of the acrylic so that it would stay glossy after the fact. Once the spraypaint had dried I applied standoffs so that the acrylic would sit slightly above the wood. Once I had applied the pannels I puts some wood finish on the wood, and once that dried I finished by putting on the Lamborghini words and I had it stand off the wood slightly.
DONE:)
Reflection Questions
What was the best question you were asked during the showcase?
During the showcase I was asked what was my favorite part of the process.
What was the hardest thing to explain during the showcase and how could you have done it better?
The hardest thing to explain was the process of getting my tool paths just because there were so many steps. Next time I could just not go into as much detail as normal.
What went well during this project?
Durring this project I think the 3d modeling and the CAD and CAM went really well
What challenges did you encounter?
Durring this project I struggled with lining up the acrylic when I had to double cut it on the Lazer Cutter
If you were to do this project again, what would you change?
I would wait for the spraypaint on the acrylic to fully dry before applying standoffs
