How to
I started by tracing the shape I wanted in Adobe Illustrator.
Next I used the Adobe Illustrator shape builder to take all of my individual shapes and make it one big shape
Next, I exported the Adobe Illustrator file as a DXF file. (THE DXF PART IS KEY!)
Creating sketch in fusion
I selected the create sketch button to start to process
The selected the plane I wanted it on. X, Y, Z plane selected (shown above)
Then I selected the Insert DXF file button to bring our Abobe DXF file to Fusion 360
Finish sketch
Extrude
Next, extrude your design to .5 inches thickness.
First select your design with the profile select button, the go to distance and change the distance to .5 in.
If you don't see your units as inches, go to the top right and click on your profile the click preferences
Then scroll down to default units and change your design and manufacture units to inches, then apply
Next, extrude the sword design down .25 inches so that it is a pocket
Manufacture
Go from design to manufacture
Create a new setup in the Manufacture
Next, Go to stock and change the mode to a fixed size box, then change your width and depth to whatever your dimentions are with a .5 margin of error (ex. if 8.75 make 9.25, etc.) then make sure your height is .5 in
Next, go to the setup page and make sure the orientation is model orientation and the origin is stock box point. Next, click the blue box next to the stock point setting and then select the front top left box point, or the bottom left point if 2D and the top point of the bottom left when 3D
First you want to select the pocket funtion and then go to the geometry tab which is the box with orange on top and select the TOP FACE of the main part of the sword blade and the handle, then go back to the tool page and select a 1/4 in tool bit
then go to the heights tab and make sure that multiple depths is selected .
then repeat for the smaller sections of the blade with smaller tool sizes
Next you want to select the countour tool and select the bottom edge like so.
Then select the 1/8th in tool bit then go to heights and select multiple depths
REPEAT FOR ALL EDGES
NC program
Select the NC program button
Make sure you post it as CENTROID/centroid and then name the file to something meaningful to you, then post it
CNC
For the CNC machine you want to send your job over by opening the NC output folder and then sending it via email to the machine. Make sure that before you run the job you set you X,Y,Z values, you makes sure the job is loaded, make sure the air compressor is on, and make sure that you piece of wood is cut to size and glued to the spoil board
Post Processing
The I went back into adobe and I used the lazer cutter to make my design. So I selected the edges I wanted for the laser cut and deleted the rest. (I selected the swored)
Then I went and set the stroke on the outline to .001 which made it so that the lazer cutter knew to cut and not engrave. Then I send it to the Fusion pro lazer cutter and i used acrylic to make my design. then I went into the program and ran my job. Finally I did some sanding, spraypainting and I glued the pieces cut by the lazar cutter on.
Reflection questions
1. In your own words describe the major steps to successfully design something in illustrator, use it to model in fusion, and use laser cutter after cutting on the CNC.
first finding a good design you want to replicate and then knowing how to image trace something in illustrator. after that in fusion I made sure that I was able to create a sketch and then make toolpaths and finally in the laser cutter I knew how to properly set the height of the laser for most effectiveness.
2. What did you learn about the process of painting and masking?
I learned how to effectively mask and spraypaint.
3. What part of CAD/CAM did you find most complicated or confusing?
I found the toolpaths can sometimes be finicky
so I just had to play with it
4. What lessons did you learn along the way about working through a multi step project?
I leaned I just have to take my time on each step of the process and not rush it
5. What tools/software did you learn to use in order to create your piece?
I learned how to use the laser cutter
