I had been wanting to learn to use our CNC plasma cutter for a while and I had never really welded anything. Then, a friend requested my help for this project... This gave me the perfect opportunity to learn a bit more about both of these skills. He asked if I could create a mounting system to attach a hydraulic pump and accompanying gas-powered engine to the tongue of his dump trailer. He needed it to be strong enough to hold these two moderately heavy mechanisms on to the trailer tongue and for it to be able to withstand being driven around very bumpy terrain
This is corduroy-wrapped framed plot I called "Swiggle creature". The project developed over the course of the year and had many phases from the initial idea to the final framed version.
Over the past several year, I have enjoyed participating in several plotter card exchanges. This is where plotter enthusiasts sign up to create and send out postcards that they create using a pen plot. Dawson has several plotters available in our Makerspace and participating in this exchanges always pushes to me to try new thing and experiment with new techniques and ideas.
Ever since we started experimenting with CNC milled woodworking projects, I've wanted to create some kind of intricate design that would be milled into a block of wood. I had thought about doing some kind of mantle or similar project with 3 dimensional details engraved into the design. Then I came upon the idea of making a highly detailed frame for a mirror. This led to one of my most complex CAD/CAM projects to date. I ended up creating aspects of this frame both Fusion 360 and VCarve.
This summer I began experimenting with using generative AI tools, like Midjourney, to attempt to create images via prompting that could be rendered using our new SE/A1 AxiDraw large format plotter. Getting Midjourney to create images that would convert to vectorized flow fields via Illustrator image trace was the first step of many that would lead to plots like the one shown here. More experimenting is still to come...
My plan for this project is to add a temperature logging device to my Ooni wood-fired pizza oven so I can track the temperature fluctuations over time. I would also like to add a way to capture the time when I add wood, so I can see how long it takes to increase the temperature after adding wood.
