Students will join this Winterim trip as Space Academy trainees. We will fly into Huntsville, Alabama, and take a shuttle to the Huntsville Space & Rocket Center, where each student will experience what it is like to be an astronaut, including the physical and mental training required to complete a space mission. Students will even get to bunk in a model of the International Space Station!
The training activities are based on NASA astronaut programs, with a focus on teamwork and leadership skills. Students will learn astronaut techniques using equipment adapted from NASA’s training program and will cultivate teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills through simulated missions. The week concludes with a graduation ceremony on Friday, where group and individual awards will be given based on performances during the week.
Today, our crew had a very full day. We arose from our “hab” and got to work on our mission training. Our day included trying to control the multi-axis trainer, the moon launch simulator, the Zero-G simulator and the mission briefing. Each of our crew received their specific mission details and assignments. We have a mission commander, a mission pilot, a payload specialist, a life support officer, and many more. We walked through a huge Saturn 5 rocket. We talked with a real NASA communications specialist and a Space Shuttle engineer. We felt the rumble of a F1 engine as it roared to life. We even had a mission briefing from a real astrophysicist. We asked great questions and received a commendation for being a very astute group. It has been a great day. We are ready to return to our bunks and rest.
Today was another full day here at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. We learned about gimbaling our rockets, space, interstellar, exploration, vehicles, and celestial navigation. We had a fantastic talk about the origin of stars, planets, moons, and black holes. We got to launch our rockets to experience the thrill on the countdown. We played some great team development games. We worked on our communication as a group. We also designed our awesome mission patch. It was an incredible day! There are a lot of stories!
