Kindergarten through Fourth Grade students will take part in a four-day Winterim experience centered around the exciting theme “Digging into Colorado’s Past.” Throughout the week, students will explore Colorado’s rich history while working collaboratively in mixed-grade color teams: Pink, Yellow, Green, Red, Orange, and Purple. These multi-age groups encourage students to build new friendships, practice leadership, and learn from one another in a supportive and engaging environment. Together, each team will design and create an exhibit for a "Dawson Discovery Museum", featuring interactive displays, models, and hands-on experiments that bring Colorado’s past to life. To deepen their learning, students will participate in two exciting field trips: a visit to a real gold mine and an exploration of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, where they will connect classroom discoveries to real-world history and science. Winterim Week promises to be a memorable blend of creativity, collaboration, and adventure. Here’s to an amazing week of digging, discovering, and learning together!
On Monday, students brought history to life by creating their own museum exhibits inspired by our theme, “Digging into Colorado’s Past.” Our color groups transformed classrooms into the Dawson Discovery Museum: From Dinos to Mustangs, where students proudly displayed their exhibits. Students rotated through the museum, exploring each exhibit and participating in hands-on activities related to the exhibit topics. The exhibits highlighted everything from prehistoric dinosaurs to Colorado’s early settlers.
To make the day even more exciting, Mr. Bones made a special appearance and shared fascinating dinosaur facts, blending art and science with handmade giant foam replicas and puppets. It was a wonderful day of discovery, creativity, and learning as students became museum curators for the day!
Students continued their exploration of Colorado’s past through exciting real-world adventures! Half of the students visited the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, where they participated in a class and explored exhibits that brought prehistoric life and Colorado history to life. The other half traveled to the Phoenix Gold Mine, where they dug into Colorado’s mining past, learned what life was like for early miners, and even tried their hand at panning for gold! While in Idaho Springs, students also enjoyed a fun lunch together at the famous Beau Jo’s Pizza. It was another memorable day of hands-on learning as students connected their learning to Colorado’s rich history.
On Wednesday, the adventure continued as the groups switched field trips. The Pink, Yellow, and Green groups headed to the Phoenix Gold Mine to step into Colorado’s mining past. They explored the mine, learned how prospectors searched for gold, and then enjoyed some yummy Beau Jo’s pizza! Meanwhile, the Red, Orange, and Purple groups spent the day at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, discovering exhibits about dinosaurs, fossils, and Colorado’s natural history. The day was filled with curiosity, exploration, and memorable experiences as students continued digging deeper into Colorado’s past!
We wrapped up our Winterim week by completing our museum exhibit rotations, giving students the opportunity to explore the final three exhibits and participate in more hands-on activities. The week was made even more special by our annual visit from the Irish dancers…a Winterim tradition that celebrates the season near St. Patrick’s Day. We finished the day relaxing with a movie, reflecting on the fun and learning of the week.
Throughout Winterim, students practiced our Dawson Winterim core competencies of respect, autonomy, compassion, integrity, optimism, curiosity, and courage, making it a week full of discovery, growth, and memorable experiences!
