To kick off our first unit in Gifted resource, students learned about some "handy" inventions. Students had to explore the item, identifying the different parts that make it work. Students discussed how the invention was an important tool for others and shared their findings with other classmates.
Students picked a narrative story about an invention. After reading the text, students identified the story elements such as the characters, plot, and moral.
Students then used online resources and printed nonfiction texts about the specific inventions. Students learned to paraphrase and write down facts about his or her invention. Each group presented information they learned about the invention.
Students picked an inventor and researched important facts about that person. Each grade level did a variety of projects such as Google Slides, story cubes, or Canva presentations. Students were able to travel around the classroom and learn facts to write down about the different inventor presentations.
Students learned about the SCAMPER creativity technique to learn how to take an everyday item and find other uses for it. Students were able to explore a PVC pipe and come up with other uses for it such as: a baton, a ruler, or a javelin for a new sport's game.
