Egypt Geography, Hieroglyphics, and Escape Rooms!
Geography: Students learned that Egypt is located on the continent of Africa. Students also explored the land of Egypt to discover the Nile River traveling the length of the entire country. Students learned that Egypt was once divided into Upper Egypt in the south and Lower Egypt in the north.
Hieroglyphics: Hieroglyphics is the name, decoding is the game! Today the student detectives began working together on deciphering hieroglyphics to solve riddles. We first read leveled texts to grasp an understanding of hieroglyphics, papyrus and the job of a scribe. Then the groups were given translations of hieroglyphics to our alphabet and then tasked to crack the codes. Awesome detective skills were in place today!
STEM Challenges
Shaduf Challenge: Students learned about the importance of the shaduf, an ancient Egyptian invention to help them gather water from the river to irrigate the crops. The students were given specific materials in order to construct a shaduf model. Students had to plan out and follow some directions to create the model.
Sugar Cube Pyramid Challenge: Students learned about teamwork and structure stability while completing this STEM challenge. Students had to use sugar cubes and liquid glue to assemble a pyramid while attempting to make theirs the tallest.
Mummies, Gifts of the Nile, and Choice Boards
Mummy Apples Challenge: We learned about how ancient Egyptians mummified the bodies of the dead. We did an experiment to see what effect “natron” had on pieces of apple. We observed the apples a week later and learned that mummification was an effective way to preserve the bodies of the dead.
Gifts of the Nile Project: “Gifts of the Nile River” tissue box project was a huge success! The students worked hard to create amazing products! The boxes were full of creative illustrations and an abundance of details about the Nile River. They were sent home yesterday so please take a look at them. Thank you to all the parents for sending in the tissue boxes (and the extras too).
