Counselor's Corner
In school counselor lessons, in the classroom, and on the Friday News we teach self-regulation strategies to all students. Your child has a Social Emotional Learning Toolbox of cards at school with multiple strategies for them to use throughout the day if they need to calm down from strong feelings. You may want to ask your child about the color zones of regulation and strategies like cupcake breathing and 5 finger breathing. Hopefully they can teach you some of the calming strategies they are learning at school. They can teach you a strategy to get from the yellow or red zone back to the green zone. Also, in school counselor lessons, we are currently learning about bullying and how to handle a bully. Sometimes students confuse peer conflict or a mean moment with bullying. But true bullying is when a person intentionally tries to hurt another person repetitively over time and there is an imbalance of power. We are teaching students how to positively handle mean moments/bullying by the STOP, WALK, and TALK method. Tell the person who is not being kind to you to STOP, then WALK away from them, and TALK to an adult. Please feel free to contact me if you or your child have a need I can help you with. I enjoy working with your child at SES!!

Next week, we begin discussing a habit of the month.
September: Habit 1: Be Proactive
Proactivity means more than just taking the initiative. As humans, we are responsible for our own lives. In other words, proactive people recognize they are solely responsible for their actions. They do not blame the conditions or circumstances for their behavior.
The behavior of proactive people is a function of their decisions. On the contrary, an emotionally reactive person will blame everything on their condition. When talking about Habit 1, Covey describes how a proactive approach helps to acknowledge a mistake quickly so that instant actions can be taken to resolve it instead of waiting for it to become a more serious issue.
