April Showers bring May Flowers....I can't believe May is upon us. Next week is a big week. Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders begin Kentucky Summative Assessments and our K-2nd graders will be completing their Measures of Academic Progress assessments (MAP). These are very important assessments to gauge the work we do each day. Please be sure to have your child at school on time as these tests begin promptly at 8:00am. All assessments must be completed before a child can participate in our annual field and water day on May 20th.
Sorgho Elementary is now accepting parent nominations for our School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council. We currently have two parent positions open and would love for you to consider getting involved!
Serving on the SBDM Council is a great opportunity to have a voice in important school decisions and to support the continued success of our students and school community. The council meets bi-monthly throughout the school year.
If you are interested in serving or would like to nominate another parent, please submit nominations by May 1st. Please include a brief bio with your nomination so families can learn more about each candidate.
Thank you for your continued support of Sorgho Elementary—we value your partnership and leadership!
Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Katy Harrison as our new principal. Mrs. Harrison will begin her new role on July 1, 2026.
Mrs. Katy Harrison
My name is Katy Harrison, and I will be the new principal at Sorgho Elementary School. I have been in education for 24 year as an assistant principal, instructional coach, and teacher. I am married to Jason, who teaches at OHS. We have 14 year old twins, Jay and Eva, who keep us going with their passions of soccer and dance. We also have two very spoiled dachshunds!
I grew up right here in Owensboro, Kentucky! My parents still live in my childhood home, and I have a brother who is in law enforcement in Tennessee. Growing up I loved soccer and participated in many community activities. I knew from a young age I wanted to be in education!
I graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2002 with a Bachelors in Education. I earned my Masters in Education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2006. I earned my National Boards in 2010 and recertified in 2021. I received my principal certification from Western Kentucky University in 2023.
I truly believe in lifelong learning, and I am excited to learn and grow with the Sorgho Wildcat family!

Habit 8: Find Your Voice and Inspire Others to Find Theirs
People who have found their voice focus on expanding their circle of influence, being trustworthy, building trust, blending the voices of others, and creating a common vision. They align goals and systems and empower others.
Great achievers express their voice by developing their vision, discipline, passion, and conscience. They recognize, respect and create meaningful opportunities for others to express their voices.
