Research shows that with increased opportunity for student response to learning, on-task and learning-oriented behavior increases, while maladaptive behavior decreases. Response opportunities occur when a teacher elicits a response (either verbal, written, or other non-verbal) where students must think about the content or skill in question and either use, manipulate, or otherwise engage with the new learning in order to answer accordingly. This is more than simply being called on - it includes various ways to respond that are frequent, meaningful, challenging ,and culturally responsive to students.
