Error correction should take the form of an informative statement, typically provided by the teacher, that is given when an undesired behavior occurs. It should state the observed behavior, and tells the student exactly what the student should do in the future (replacement behavior.) Intonation and voice tone should remain neutral as much as possible. Correcting student behavior in this way is considered an "instructional approach" to student discipline, in that a student's understanding of and ability to behave appropriately at school is not taken for granted, just as it is not presumed that students possess the reading ability needed to learn without first being taught.
