The Dartmouth Argentine Tango Society (DATS) was founded in the winter of 2005 by Barry Hashimoto '06, who discovered his love for tango while on a Dartmouth foreign study program. With the support of founding members Luisa Wang '03, Katerina Simons, Armin Helisch, Francine A'ness, and Keysi Montas, DATS has grown into a community that connects Dartmouth students and local enthusiasts through the art of tango.
We offer weekly lessons, workshops, and social dances (milongas), creating a welcoming space for dancers of all levels. Over the years, we've had the privilege of hosting guest instructors from New York City to Buenos Aires, who have shared their passion through performances, lessons, and live music. Artist such as Alicia Cruzado, Guillermo Merlo and Juan Pablo Jofre have honored Dartmouth and taught workshops on Tango.
In 2011, DATS had one of its largest events. Through collaboration with the Dartmouth Wind Symphony and the Hopkins Center, DATS was able to host a Tango Festival on Campus. The festival featured performances and workshops by New York based professionals Adriana Salgado and her partner Orlando Reyes. The festival also included a performance by bandoneon artist Juan Pablo Jofre. During the 3 days of the festival Dartmouth students and community members were able to receive private dance lessons with Salgado and Reyes as well as attend community group classes. Concerts were held and the weekend concluded with the Dartmouth Wind Symphony playing Tango Nuevo: A Concert.
Our history doesn't just consist on the marvoulous events hosted, our history is made every second we come together as a community. Each time we meet, we are able to share our passion of Tango with others and fortify the bonds between all those who participate. At DATS, we cultivate a shared love for tango, bringing together dancers of all levels to experience the joy and artistry of this timeless dance.
