Dr. Armin Helisch, MD first began studying tango around 1996 when he lived in New York City. At the time, he formed a tango club at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. He then joined the Dartmouth community in 2003 as an assistant professor of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, as well as a cardiologist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, specializing in echocardiography. In 2005, after organizing the first tango workshop, he was approached by students interested in forming a tango club. This was the origin of DATS, and since then, Armin has served as the faculty advisor. He has also been a regular class instructor (with Marta) since 2014. for our weekly tango classes.
Marta Ceroni is the co-director at the Academy for Systems Change, a Vermont non-profit organization focused on advancing the field of awareness-based systemic change in order to accelerate ecological, social, and economic well-being. There she helps coordinate research and content development building on Donella Meadows' work. Marta has a doctorate in forest ecology and previously worked as a research professor at the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont, as well as with the United Nations Development Programme. Marta has a multitude of experience as an educator, group facilitator, researcher, author, and dancer, all of which she brings to the DATS community as a wonderful instructor and leader.
İdil Şahin serves as the student president of the Dartmouth Argentine Tango Society. Outside of DATS, however, Idil studies Computer Science, Math, and Design. She is also an undergraduate researcher at the Dartmouth Cognitive Neuroscience Lab of Learning. She is a part of Spare Rib and is an active member of the DALI Lab, working as a graphic designer, design mentor, and graphic design lead.
Thomas Hohmann recently joined the DATS leadership team as the treasurer after being introduced to tango through Spanish 43.06: Tango Argentino: Music, Dance, Poetry, Community. Outside of DATS, he studies chemistry and is minoring in Hispanic Studies. He also plays club soccer and is a member of Dartmouth EMS, working as an EMT and serving as their Administrative Officer.
Carly McAleer serves as the student vice president/ secretary of DATS. She joined DATS after being introduced to tango by a close friend as she enjoys the community engagement aspect of tango and meeting new people through the society. Outside of DATS, Carly is a double major in Chinese and Environmental Studies. She is also on the women’s rowing team and works with the bike shop through the Dartmouth Sustainability Office.
