To maintain membership in the NHS, members must adhere to the rules and requirements outlined below and in the NHS Constitution and Bylaws. Members must:
Uphold the same qualities they exhibited when selected to join the NHS.
Attend a minimum of 75% of NHS meetings and functions or risk dismissal from the NHS. Attendance is tracked by the Executive Board.
Display exemplary scholarship (an minimum GPA of 3.7 weighted on a 4.0 scale).
Perform ongoing community service (3 hours per month).
Members of the NHS must participate in ongoing community service to maintain membership in the organization and should adhere to the information below and in the NHS Bylaws and Constitution to ensure that all service requirements are met. Members must:
Complete 30 hours of community/school service per school year (3 per month). 15 of these hours must be earned through non-NHS-sponsored projects.
Seek approval from the DHS NHS advisor to participate in service projects outside of the NHS.
Log monthly service hours in NHS service form.
*Members who do not meet the monthly requirement for service hours will have an additional 1.5 hours of service added to their duties for the following month. Members who do not meet their service hours requirment more than once will risk dismissal from the NHS.
*Hours from summer service projects will count only toward the required number of hours for the remaining calendar months of the year.
Guidelines For Service Hours
Members of the NHS must adhere to the follow guidelines for service hours.
Any event with the purpose of benefiting the community (that is unpaid) is considered community service.
Entertainment counts only if there is no admission cost or the profit from admissions goes to a charitable cause.
An event sponsored by a charitable organization that is designed to directly benefit the organization is not considered service.
Any educational service must involve direct contact with students.
Activities that are an expected part of membership in a church or school organization cannot be counted toward NHS service hour requirements.
All service hours must be documented in order to qualify toward NHS service hour requirements.
An adult advisor must be able to sign off on this volunteering and cannot be a family member.
