Our school community creates a supportive climate where students practice collaborative problem solving and understand others perspectives while valuing and respecting diversity. Students value that global citizenship begins with responsible citizenship in one’s own world.
The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) recognizes schools as Schools of Distinction for their performance and growth in the following areas:
Highest Performing: Schools in the top 10% of the Accountability Index
Highest Growth: Schools in the top 10% of points earned in the academic growth indicator
Greatest Improvers: Schools in the top 10% of improvement on the Accountability Index from one year to the next
The CSDE uses the Next Generation Accountability System to evaluate schools on 12 indicators, including: academics, attendance, access to the arts, graduation rates, and physical fitness.
Students learn to look outside themselves and be part of a larger community through participation in activities such as
food composting in our cafeteria,
community garden activities,
school and home recycling efforts,
bonds with community organizations.
Students learn about our role as peacekeepers in the world by fostering an appreciation of how we live, work, play, and examine elements such as
geographic location,
language,
economy,
and climate and cultural similarities and differences.
Students become critical thinkers and independent problem solvers while mastering core curriculum. Students develop skills in
communication,
conflict resolution, and
social advocacy via effective modeling practices throughout their school day as well as instruction during community time.
Students are encouraged to be inquisitive risk takers and explore their ideas in a safe and supportive environment by
establishing a respectful relationship between students, parents, and staff
creating respectiful and long-lasting relationships amongst ourselves and others.
Western Connecticut Academy for International Studies has been named a 2018 Green Ribbon School for its environmentally sustainable practices by the U.S. Department of Education.
