Over the summer the Digital Resource Center was completely renovated and remodeled into the New Digital Recreation Center. The name change was small, but that's where the subtleties end. There are a total of four televisions now, one with a Nintendo Switch docking port where up to six people can play Smash at one time. One television plays news and current events, one plays basic Netflix stuff, and the last plays the Damien promo video. A retro gaming system with joysticks and everything has been added to the back corner of the room with every game from the original Doom to Street Fighter. There is a ping-pong table, a foosball table, shuffleboard table, and a big chess board. Two couches have been added, in front of the Smash TV and in front of the Netflix TV. There are two rows of tables in the back of the room for eating lunch or getting homework done.
Damien staff really came together to set it up. Contractors were only used in starting the flooring, the rest of the tiling and all other renovations were done by Damien staff. That is Mr.Salabaj, Mr.Jimenez, Mr.Maricic, Mr.Mcelrea, Mr.McKenzie, Mr.Truax, Mrs. Pasillas, and Mrs.Maricic. Mr. Jimenez and Mr. Salabaj framed in and painted the south door and mounted the TVs. Mr. Maricic helped Mr. Salabaj with the flooring. Mr.McElrea and Mr.McKenzie built the video game system. Mr. McKenzie found one of the sectionals and the other one was
donated by Mrs.Truax and Mrs Pasillas’ Family. Mr and Mrs Maricic got the chess table. The foosball table was on the set of the Nickelodeon show Knight Squad, Mr.Maricic found it on an auction and got it. The shuffle board was donated by a Damien alumni.
Damien wants this room to be a fun, relaxing environment for students to take a load off but here are a variety of rules for the new DRC. The games, ping pong, foosball, chess, and videogames, can only be played during lunch and after school as there is no time before school or at break. If you are going to play a game, you need to check out the pieces, paddles, or balls by giving Mr.Salabaj at the front desk your student ID or phone. You cannot eat on or around the couches. Long story short on the rules, we must use common sense in the DRC as it is so nice and we want to keep it that way.
The new DRC is without a doubt the best recreational center out of any highschool that I at least have experienced. In entering all are required to listen to Mr.Salabaj promote and try to recruit more people to the wrestling team which is looking to have a historically good season this year. If anybody has not yet been in, all are encouraged to go in and relax or engage in some friendly competition with fellow Spartans.
