Dallas ISD’s top-notch nationally recognized Dual Language program gives your child an opportunity to learn how to speak, write, read, listen, and think in both Spanish and English. Gaining this skill set prepares students for greater career and professional options, as well as gives them a competitive edge in the global marketplace.
In the Dual Language classroom, instruction is provided in Spanish and English. Students also learn and grow by interacting with their peers whose first language is Spanish and/or English.
Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that focuses on the non-discrimination of students with disabilities. The law says that a public school, or any other federally funded public facility, cannot discriminate against a student because of a disability and must be given the same opportunities to participate in academic and extracurricular activities.
Under Section 504, students with disabilities may receive accomodations and services to ensure that their individual educaitonal needs are met as adequately as those of non-disabled students.
Process: Nomination- Parental Consent- Identification Criteria- Assessments- Selection- Notification
Nomination: Students may be nominated for the gifted and talented progra at any grade level by teachers, counselors, parents or other interested persons. Contact shall be made with nominated students and/or their parents to determine interest in pursuing the program further.
Parental Consent: Written parental consent shall be obtained before any assessment is conducted as part of the screening and identification process. All student information collected during the screening and identification process shall be an educational record, subject to the protections set out in Dallas ISD Board Policy.
Identification Criteria: Criteria to identify gifted and talented students shall be established in the Board-approved program for the gifted and talented and shall ensure the fair assessment of students with special needs, such as the culturally different, the economically disadvantaged, and students with disabilities.
Assessments: Data collected through both objective and subjective assessments shall be measured against the criteria approved by the Board to determine individual eligibility for the program. Assessment tools may include but are limited to the following achievement tests, intelligence tests, creativity tests, behavioral checklists completed by the teacher and the parents, student/parent conferences and student work products.
Selection: A selection committee shall evaluate each nominated student according to the established criteria and shall select those students for whom gifted program placement is the most appropriate educational setting. The committee shall be composed of at least four professional educators who have received training in the nature and needs of gifted students and shall be established at the elementary level and at the secondary level.
Notification: Parents and students shall be notified in writing upon selection of the student for the gifted program. The District shall obtain written permission of the students' parent before a student is placed in a gifted program.
