In April 2024, the Workforce Pathway Act was approved, prompting the Alabama State Department of Education to revise the Alabama Administrative Code to include additional options for earning a high school diploma.
As a result, public school students in Alabama now have two distinct diploma pathways. The first, known as Option A, follows the Traditional Pathway. The second, referred to as the Workforce Diploma Pathway or Option B, is designed to expand academic and career readiness opportunities through skilled trade education.
The table below outlines the key differences between these two diploma pathways as implemented by Daleville City Schools.
Please note that at this time, the NCAA Clearinghouse or NAIA has not given guidance on the Workforce Pathway; therefore, athletic eligibility may be impacted with Option B.
The student should complete the request form located in the Counseling & Career Office in the Spring of their Sophomore or Junior year.
The student and parent/guardian will need to schedule an appointment with their school counselor. If a student has an IEP or an IELP, the team will need to meet and come to a consensus.
This documentation will then be filed in the student’s cumulative folder and notated in PowerSchool.
End of the Junior year pending eligibility.
Student eligibility will be determined when entering their Junior year. Senior year eligibility will be determined at the end of the Junior year.
The student must have successfully passed or be enrolled in the following math and science courses:
a. Geometry with Data Analysis
b. Algebra I with Probability or Algebra II with Statistics*
c. Biology
d. A Physical Science (Physical Science, Chemistry, or Physics)
*This designates the course that students must take if they are allowed to bypass Algebra I after completion of both seventh and eighth grade Accelerated Mathematics.
3. The student must have completed, be enrolled, or applied for at least 3 Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses within the same program, make a C or better in each course, and obtain Completer Status.
4. The student must meet all other graduation requirements laid out by the Alabama State Department of Education and Daleville City Schools as outlined in the Daleville High School Handbook.
Please Note
Students will be allowed to revert back to Option A at the end of a semester if there is time and room in their schedule to complete the graduation requirements.
The requirements for this pathway are established by SB 253 and the Alabama Administrative Code.
