In the United States, many businesses are currently experiencing labor shortages. Even with high levels of unemployment, there are still many challenges with trying to hire employees. There are currently 9.5 million unemployed people with about 9.2 million job openings according to Roy Maurer, writer for SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), it is difficult to pinpoint the reasons for the shortage of workers.
Several businesses are offering bonuses and special conditions, in order to recruit more employees. According to Maurer, “To fill critical openings, 57 percent of employers surveyed by SHRM are offering referral bonuses, 55 percent are hiring external or temporary workers, 44 percent are upskilling and reskilling staff, and 43 percent are boosting pay.” Most businesses are desperate to fill positions and find people to work.

There is significant controversy about why there is a labor shortage. Typically, the older age demographic believes that the newer generation is just lazy and does not want to work. Others believe that people are demanding change by not working because it is causing employers to give better working conditions.
Holly Ellyat, a journalist for CNBC says, “We believe there is a more permanent loss of workers driven by a large number of older workers taking early retirement. The thought of returning to the office and the daily commute may seem unpalatable for many people”. Many people believe that, with the pandemic and the monetary benefits from the government, people just do not feel like working anymore.
With this shortage, many people are experiencing challenges and difficulties. Regardless of opinion, this is still a prominent topic to learn about and discuss.
