Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, otherwise known as Odd Future, was an alternative hip-hop group formed in Los Angeles in 2007. Odd Future started with 10 members, including Tyler, the Creator, Hodgy, Casey Veggies, Left Brain, the Super 3 and others. Members have compared themselves to the Wu-Tang Clan but, instead of rapping about chess and kung-fu, they rapped about skateboarding and being stupid teens.
On Oct. 3, 2011, Odd Future’s debut mixtape, 12 Odd Future Songs, was released. It consisted of 13 songs made by different people in the collective group, including Domo Genesis, Mike G and Tyler, the Creator, to name a few. This mixtape was mainly just a mix of many of the creators songs that they would perform when they had concerts, as explained on the cover, which read, “These are random Odd Future songs that might be performed at shows for people who don’t dig deeper threw the Odd Future catalog. We know this art work sucks.”
The OF Tape Vol. 2 was released on Mar. 16, 2012, less than a year after Odd Future released their first mixtape. This album consisted of 18 songs, many being fan favorites, including "Analog 2" and "White". This is when they founded their iconic Odd Future donut logo and truly started to become an Iconic part of alternative hip-hop. They went on a tour when this album was released, going to cities in America such as Portland and Baltimore.
On Mar. 12, 2012 a show named Loiter Squad was released, showing members of Odd Future doing skits and random things. It lasted for three seasons and ended in 2014, but it showed the personality of each member of the group and allowed them to be themselves. Even though it was a great show, Tyler Okonama and the rest of the star members of the show decided to end it because touring was far more important than Loiter Squad. IMDb gave it a 7/10, with all episodes being above a 7.
Throughout OFWGKTA’s career, the group has done many concerts. On Nov. 8, 2010, they had their first concert in New York. According to Concert Archives, Odd Future has had over 135 concerts. They went across the country and even to other countries, like Canada and The United Kingdom. Eventually, they would start their own festival: Camp Flog Gnaw. This was a 2-day venue featuring carnival games and rides, as well as multiple stages where artists and groups would perform. This festival is still going on to this day, with its tenth anniversary taking place last year.
Odd Future has not been active since 2015-2016 because of conflicts within the group. Multiple old members left due to personal reasons, including stress from touring and differing beliefs. Tyler, the Creator hinted that Odd Future was breaking up on Twitter, saying “although its no more, those 7 letters are forever.” Even though Odd Future's career was not the longest, they had an everlasting impact on the alternative hip-hop community.
Many members have gotten popular from Odd Future’s fame, propelling their music into mainstream media. Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator are the most prevalent examples of this. Tyler went on to release six more albums and Frank Ocean releasing two albums, both becoming faces of rap and hip hop.
Overall, Odd Future was formed in 2011 with a release of a mixtape and one album, which boosted themselves to mainstream media fame in under a year. The dedication of the members in the group shows why the group got so popular so fast, as well as why they are one of the faces of alternative hip hop.
