According to USA Today, Trump previously held the presidency until Jan. 20, 2021, when he was succeeded by Joe Biden. Now back in office, he has vowed to restore the country he claims former President Biden damaged, as reported by ABC News.
President Trump has promised that his second term will “reshape American life, culture, economics, politics, and diplomacy,” noted The Seattle Times. On his first day in office, he pledged to begin mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, end birthright citizenship, reform border policies, pardon Jan. 6 defendants, and resolve the conflicts in Ukraine and Hamas. According to NBC News, he also plans to bolster the economy, impose tariffs, and overturn many "Biden-era" policies on equality and anti-discrimination.
Economic issues were a focal point of the presidential debates. Trump has set several goals to address the nation's financial state. He intends to raise tariffs on foreign goods, including imports from China and Canada. He has also pledged to lower gas prices to below $2 per gallon and, according to BBC, aims to eliminate inflation.
The border remains a major priority for President Trump, who considers it a national emergency. He has initiated mass deportations of undocumented immigrants and is working to seal the border. As reported by The Washington Post, he has deployed 10,000 troops to the border, citing concerns over migrant crime and emphasizing that securing the border is crucial for American safety.
Many of former President Biden's policies have already been reversed or scrapped. According to The Los Angeles Times, Trump plans to overhaul border policy, reform taxes and the economy, pardon Jan. 6 defendants and anti-abortion activists, and revoke transgender healthcare protections and anti-discrimination measures. He has argued that the country has experienced a severe decline and requires immediate executive action.
In his first four days in office, President Trump has actively implemented his agenda. According to NBC Chicago, he has pardoned most of the Jan. 6 defendants, lifted the TikTok ban, reversed several Biden-era immigration policies, withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, and ended American participation in the World Health Organization, amongst other executive orders.
President Trump assures the public that his leadership will lead to a safer, more affordable, traditional, and "great" America. According to The official White House website, he has identified these priorities as the cornerstone of his presidency. Thus far, his term has been marked by a flurry of executive orders. However, the long-term impact of these actions remains to be seen.
