The Grants Pass High School administration needs to realize that students need to have tasty food, too. Students need filling and tasty food for lunch to make them happy. If the breakfasts are delicious, then it will cause students to want to go to school to eat and to learn. It would also cause the students to get better grades because, when they are well-fed they do better in school. The school needs to add the better lunches and enough lunches for everyone in the school to eat. If students at GPHS eat good lunches, they would not have to leave campus as often, thus decreasing money spent on gas and even help with our carbon footprint.
Better breakfasts would motivate students to come to school earlier because food makes people happy. An article called “Healthy Food Choices In School” by Katherine Baildon of Cornell University stated that “Children who eat a complete breakfast have been shown to work faster and make fewer mistakes in math problems and to perform better on vocabulary tests than those who ate only a partial breakfast.” This statement shows that Grants Pass needs a to implement better breakfast choices that the our students want.
Some of the food that the administration could put into the school lunches could be quality sandwiches. There are many options for making sandwiches-- like turkey, ham, and a variety of cheeses or even lettuce or tomato. Shay Savoie, a junior at GPHS, said that “If there were custom sandwiches I would never leave for lunch!” Soups would also work, because they have lots of nutrients and are warm for those dreaded cold winter days. Bottom line, the administrators should be creating meals that are healthy for students. These meals should be enough to fill them up, and keep them full for the rest of the day or until dinner.
If the GPHS administration were to establish lunches that students enjoyed, then kids would not have to leave campus as much; consequently, helping to lessen our carbon-footprint. It would also let the kids have more money for school supplies and other necessities, like gas. In addition, kids wouldn't be late to class as much because they would not have to leave for lunch. Students not being late to class would increase the amount of time in the classroom, ensuring that they have the opportunity to learn more. If the school and administration made the food enjoyable, it would help with obesity and other dietary concerns within our school, because students would not get fast food as often and have a higher probability of eating the healthier and more filling food options at GPHS.
The students at Grants Pass High School need comforting features and food is one of them. If we give students the a better variety of more filling and healthy eating choices that makes them happy, then Grants Pass High School would become a better place.
