Creativity Corner

Calling all creative writers! This is a column run by Liv Akers and Mariah Lumsden to inspire readers to write. The column includes writing prompts, pieces by the coordinators, and occasional submissions from readers.

Calling all creative writers!

Welcome to Creativity Corner, a space for readers to write in The Scroll without necessarily being journalists! Deadline is April 30th. We will be giving a $10 Dutch Bros gift card to the author of our favorite submission, so we hope to see you participate soon!

How to participate:

Below are a set of prompts for different styles of writing beyond journalism. The idea is that you can create some kind of creative writing piece inspired by one of the prompts, but it doesn't have to be! You can submit any piece of writing you'd like to share! All submissions should be school-appropriate.

Send in your submissions to gphsthescroll@gmail.com to be featured in the column! You are more than welcome to send in anonymously or put your name on your piece. Please just specify when emailing us. Thanks!

Prompts:

Here are some prompts to inspire your writing this month! if you try one, let us know how it goes. :)

  1. Write a stand-up act for a comedian! It can be for yourself as a comedian, or if you have a favorite comedian, it can be an act for them.

  2. Write a short story with your best friends as the characters.

  3. Write an alternate ending to your favorite book, movie, or series.

  4. Take your favorite song and write a response to it! For instance, you could write a response to driver’s license from the point of view of her ex, or the blonde girl.

  5. If your most prized possession were sentient, what would it say, think, or act? Write a story or poem about it, or a story, poem, or essay from its point of view.

A Reader Submission

An anonymous reader poses a question: Who would win in a fight, a billion lions, or one of every single Pokemon?

First, we need to agree that we are using the main series games as our base for all Pokemon, but excluding Pokedex entries, because those are wild; like saying Magcargo is hotter than the surface of the sun, Gardevoir can create black holes, and anything that sees Mimikyu dies. This gives the lions an advantage.

To start off, we need a Pokemon version of lions for the purpose of HP and stats. Luckily, there is a lion pokemon: Twp, Litleo and Pyroar. We will be using Pyroar, because why would we use cubs? Now, we will also keep the same stats, but make all the lions normal types because lions are a product of the real world and therefore wouldn’t fall into Pokemon’s types system. Since these are normal lions, I am even giving them a move pool: Crunch, Roar, Tackle, Take Down, all of which are learned by Pyroar.

In every single variation the Pokemon wins. With the existence of Ghost type Pokemon, we know that normal types cannot hurt Ghost types, and since the only non-normal type move is Crunch, we can still say that it simply won't be enough to take down every Pokemon with one dark type move, which has 80 power.

Now, the most optimal way to win is going to be to OHKO (one hit knock out) every lion in one move. To combat this, any move that targets multiple Pokemon is at 75% power, meaning we will have to use moves that are strong enough for this not to be a factor and occasionally use moves to raise stats. In generation 6 XY, horde battles were introduced, which is what I'm basing the battle format on, as it is more Pokemon in a single battle than any other version we have seen. In a horde battle a spread move or a move that hits multiple targets hits every target available, so if we find a strong enough move, we can OHKO every lion in one turn.

To do this, once again we need to find one Pokemon with a spread move and beef it up using moves that raise allies’ stats. I'm not counting Dynamax or mega or Z moves as a courtesy to the lions and for better calculations. The Pokemon that will deliver the hit is Kyoger; it has Water Spout, one of the strongest spread moves in the game at 150 power, and as a legendary has over a 600 base stat total. To beef up the move, we are going to use Helping Hand, a move that always moves first and multiplies damage by 1.5. There are 308 Pokemon that can learn the move Helping Hand, and you are able to use the moves on a single target multiple times. We are saving one Pokemon for later in this set up, so it is a multiplied total of 1.5^308. Also, there are two Pokemon that power up allies with abilities, Charjabug with battery and Stonegurner with Powerspot, both giving a 1.3x increase to damage. There are also 58 Pokemon that can’t learn the move Helping Hand, but can learn Role Play, a move that replaces abilities with their own. Meaning we can get the boost 60 times leaving a total of 1.3X10^60.

If you are going to say, “The lions will move before Kyogre and knock it out,” we can use a Greninja and use Mat Block, which blocks all damage for that turn. We can also use rain dance to boost Water Type moves. Finally, to complete this setup we have an Oranguru use the move Instruct, which has Kyoger use the move it just did one more time before the end of the turn.

Finally, with all these boosts, our move will be ~1.182 * 10^63 power. Or a little over a vigintillion base power (Yes, that's a real number, it has with 63 zeros). If that is not enough to OHKO every single lion on the next turn, we can do it 5 times in one turn. We put up the same setup, except we have Ditto and Mew transform in the first turn into Oranguru and use Instruct again, and have Smeargle use sketch and use it again, leaving us with Kyogre using Water Spout with boosted stats a total of 5 times, leaving us with a total of ( ~1.182 * 10^63) X 5.

In conclusion, even with the lions being level 100 with max stats, the Pokemon win every time.

Thanks for reading!!

It was so cool getting our first reader submission this month! We hope to see more submissions from you guys in the future! :)
