Higher level thinking skills

Higher Level Thinking

Reading Extended Responses

are used to push students to use higher-level thinking skills. The following is the model we will be using to answer questions and responses within class. In parenthesis, you will find sentence starters that students are encouraged to use.

C E I O

C: Change your prompt into a topic sentence.

E: Use evidence from the text. (In this story it said... or The text also stated... or Another part of the story said...)

I: Interpret the evidence with your own idea. (To me this means... or Clearly, this shows me... or This tells me that...)

O: State your "oh" or "ah" moment. (From reading and thinking about this story, I ...)

Debates

Students critically analyze a situation and use evidence to create viable arguments. In doing so, students gain public speaking skills and develop listening and note-taking skills.
