Hard and Soft

C and G

Sometimes the letter "c" makes a hard sound, as in cat, cut and cube.

When the letter "c" is followed by an e, i, or y... the c makes a loft c sound.

Sometimes the letter "g" makes a hard sound, as in grape, gum and glitter.

Just like the letter c, when a g is followed by an e, i, or y... the g makes a loft g sound.

Bossy R

Bossy r makes the a sound like a pirate, “arrrr” = car, jar

Bossy r makes the o sound like the word “or” = more, chore

Bossy r makes words with ir, er, ur all make the “er” sound = bird, October, her

Long Vowels

Vowels are called "long vowels" when they say their name.

When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.

Adding an e to the end of a word makes the vowel say it's name.

Digraphs

A digraph is the name for two letters that come together to make one sound.

Sh come together to make the sound in ship, shelter and shape.

Th come together to make he sound thank, thirsty and thick.

Ch come together to make the sound in chapter, chip and chin.

Wh are a little trickier. They come together to make the sound at the beginning of whip, what and where.


Consonant Clusters

As students begin to read words with longer words, they notice that often see consonants next to each other. As we sound these words out, we can hear the sound connected with each letter, even though the sounds are blended smoothly when we say the word.

Rhyming

We can identify and use rhyming words

in poems, songs and stories.

Words rhyme when they have the same ending vowel and consonant sounds. The first graders in Room 103 have been working with rhyming words.
