I will add new topics to the top of the page. Scroll down to review any math topics we have learned about in class.

Chapters 5 and 6

Place Value

Use base ten blocks to help you add

2 digit numbers together when you don't need to regroup.

Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120.

Read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

Use what you know about place value and how to write big numbers to fill in the numbers when you are only given part of a number chart.

Comparing Numbers

Numbers can be shown as a group of 10 and some more.

15= 10 and 5 more

10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones called a "ten."

Base 10 blocks can be used to represent a written numeral.

Chapters 2 and 4

Subtraction

Lots of the same strategies that help us add can be used to help us subtract.

Math Vocabulary

The difference is the answer to and subtraction number sentence.

Use objects to help find the difference.

The first graders will work on subtracting numbers vertically to find out that you can add across or add down. The difference will always be the same.

Count back on a number line to subtract.

Knowing the doubles facts can help you subtract.

If 10+10=20, then you know that 20-10=10

If 9+9=18, then you know that 18-9=9

If 8+8=16, then you know that 16-8=8

If 7+7=14, then you know that 14-7=7

If 6+6=12, then you know that 12-6=6

If 5+5=10, then you know that 10-5=5

If 4+4=8, then you know that 8-4=4

If 3+3=6, then you know that 6-3=3

Chapters 1 and 3

Addition

I will add a target as we learn each math concept.

Math Vocabulary

The sum is the answer to and addition number sentence.

------------------------------------------

The equal sign (=) means "the same." This will be a very important concept for the students to understand when we start working on true and false equations.

3+5=8 and 8=5+3 are both true equations.

Addition Strategies

The students will learn about how to join parts to make a whole.

We will use the plus sign and the equals sign to join groups and make

an addition number sentence.

The first graders will learn about the zero property of addition.

0+7=7 4+0=4

The first graders will work on adding numbers vertically to find out that you can add across or add down. The sum will always be the same.

Word Problems!

The first graders will learn to use the part/ part/ whole chart to help solve tricky word problems.

Students will find all the different ways

to use addition to show 10.

0+10=10 10+0=10

1+9-10 9+1=10

2+8=10 8+2=10

3+7=10 7+3=10

4+6=10 6+4=10

5+5=10

Knowing the doubles facts can help you add.

Double 1 is 2

Double 2 is 4

Double 3 is 6

Double 4 is 8

Double 5 is 10

Double 6 is 12

Double 7 is 14

Double 8 is 16

Double 9 is 18

Double 10 is 20

Doubles JKAT.mp4

Doubles +1

If you know that 5+5=10, then you can know that 5+6=11

We know this because 6 is one more than 5, then we know that we need to add one more to the sum and 11 is one more than 10.

Counting On

Don't count everything,

Don't count it all.

Start with the big number

and count on the small.

Use a numberline.

Learn the buddy numbers that make 10.

Add 3 numbers.

Looking for a ten or doubles can help when adding with more than 2 addends.

Math Practices

There are eight mathematical practices embedded in instruction throughout the school year.

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

4. Model with mathematics.

5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

6. Attend to precision.

7. Look for and make use of structure.

8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
