Homework
The purpose and intention of math homework is for practice. Math, much like playing a sport, requires upkeep and practice so skills are not lost or forgotten.
Homework is an extension of the school day. Assignments are given to reinforce, practice and enrich materials covered in class. Homework will be graded as a completion, it will be reviewed in class and students are expected to make corrections and self-assess. This self-assessment and correction process helps with metacognition.
Due to curriculum changes, there may be nights where no formal homework is assigned. On nights where there is not formal homework, students should login to IXL to practice their math skills.
If your child has a question about homework, please help, but try to encourage them to work independently. If your child requires a great deal of help, please let me know how I can help them.
**On any night that a formal homework assignment was lost or left at school please do the following: jot a note into the assignment notebook and have your child do 20-30 minutes of alternative practice on IXL or an on-going challenge.
Please note that this incident will result in a grade reduction of 10% for the night and the missing worksheet will need to be completed the following night.
With our Math in Focus curriculum, I will not be able to email homework or post copies of homework online.
*Please see individual math grade level pages for more homework specifics.
Math Tests
Third and Fourth graders receive Study Guides to help them prepare for their tests and we review them in class. Fifth grade students will be responsible for taking notes while we review. In addition, all of the students should look over their spiral notebooks.
Whenever we correct math pages I encourage students to mark corrections and make notes with their colored pens so they can review these notes for their test.
Tests and quizzes will always be announced at least a day or two ahead of time to allow proper studying. I also allow corrections of test questions that are missed at ½ credit back toward the test grades that are a C- (71%) or below. Correction credit will not exceed a C (72%) If your son or daughter is naturally getting an A, B or C on a math test, there is no need to do any additional corrections.
