Vista is launching the VRHS Career & College Challenge. Students earn points by participating in a variety of activities designed to prepare them for life after high school. For instance, students can earn points for excelling in a CTE class, for completing an internship, for applying for a scholarship, or for taking the ASVAB.
Check out the VRHS Career & College Challenge link to get started.
Awards will be given for each category: Career, College, and Military, as well for highest points overall. Specific prizes will be announced later in the semester.
Please reach out to Dr. Cephus with any questions!
The VRHS Counseling Department is here to support you as you decide what career to pursue after high school. Through career profilers, Career and Technical Education classes, and work-based learning opportunities, VRHS offers a variety of ways to find your passion and begin working towards your goals while you are still in high school.
Want to know what careers align with your own aptitudes and interests? YouScience is a comprehensive career profiler that matches students with best-fit careers and helps students to discover their passions. The tool also allows students to connect with technical, community, and 4-year colleges.
Vista Ridge students take the YouScience assessment during their freshman year in their Advisory class. Students can return to their YouScience results at any time by going to the YouScience Log In page and clicking on “Brightpath Log In.”
Students who were not enrolled at VRHS during their freshman year can request access by emailing Dr. Cephus (heidi.cephus@d49.org) or Mr. Brandt (mike.brandt@d49.org).

Still discovering what careers are out there? Want to know which jobs pay the most? Interested in finding an in demand career?

Work Based Learning provides an opportunity for students to "test out" a career before committing to further education or training. Students may participate by setting up informational interviews (meetings to learn more about a career) or by participating in job shadows or internships.
JOB SHADOWS
Job Shadows are a great way to get to know what it’s actually like to work in a career field. Students typically spend between 2-4 hours at a work site and gain valuable insight into the environment, demands, and benefits of a particular job.
INTERNSHIPS
Internships can be a great way to gain experience in a career you are considering. VRHS awards .5 Credits (equivalent to a one semester class) for successful completion of a 60 hour internship and 1 Credit for successful completion of a 120 hour internship.
Pikes Peak Business and Education Alliance
Looking for an internship? The Pikes Peak Business & Education Alliance, or PPBEA, website is a great place to start. The PPBEA facilitates connections between students and local career professionals. Students can explore jobs through informational videos, set up informational interviews, complete job shadowing, and apply for internships.
To get started, create an account, complete your profile, and make sure your guardians check their email so that they can approve any in-person opportunities.
Other Internship Opportunities
Occasionally, a local business may ask to advertise an internship with VRHS. These opportunities will be communicated via email to students who have expressed interest in that career field.
We also encourage students to advocate for themselves. If you are interested in veterinary work, for example, ask your family vet whether they have an opportunity for you to shadow or volunteer. Once you form a relationship with the business, they may be open to talking about an internship. VRHS can work with you and the business to develop a plan for the internship.
The Pikes Peak Workforce Center (PPWFC) provides numerous resources for young adults, including job search assistance, hiring events, job readiness workshops, and resume writing help. PPWFC also publishes a weekly newsletter for Young Adults (ages 16 to 24) with links to recently posted job opportunities.
Connecting Colorado is a job search site created in partnership with the Colorado Workforce Center and the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. You can upload your resume, search for jobs in a specific industry, and apply for open positions. Through the Governor’s Job Hunt, young adults (16 to 24) are eligible for additional job search assistance through the PPWFC).
