We are starting our year with the novel Blood on the River which is based on the setting of James Town. In this unit, we will work to

1. understand the impact setting has on a story as well as what it can teach us about historical events

2. recognize what makes historical fiction different from other types of fiction

3. analyze the effect power has on people

4. work to answer the following questions:

*How does setting inform us of the hardships of the past?

*Why do people abuse their power over others?

*How can a person's decisions and actions change his or her life?
